The Old Station Cafe
Tanya McVeigh’s Old Station Café is a favourite with locals.
She too is very much part of the local scene, born in Harbour Village and living in Goodwick all her life. This remarkable small business employs ten people, open six days a week with only four days off over Christmas and New Year.
The Old Station building had to be rebuilt by the County Council when the station was re-opened in 2016, as the old building was listed. Tanya took it on as the first tenant ten years ago. She would like to buy the building and make it work even harder than it does, adding solar panels to help with energy costs.
Tanya has been in catering all her life.
Since starting at aged 13 helping in Mrs Wentworth before working in the galley on board the SS Felicity, one of Stena’s ferries for seven years before taking on the Harbour station café and the café in the waiting area for car passengers then opening the Parrog Cafe in 2002.
Taking on the tenancy of the Old Station building in 2016 was fulfilling a dream to own her own business which, one day, might be handed on to her daughter. She had to equip and furnish the then empty building. Her team of three full time and six part time manage the 26 indoor seats with more 30 outdoor when weather permits, all from what is a small kitchen area.
Catering for special occasions
From here Tanya can supply the catering for the Members’ Tent at Fishguard Show and other special occasions. She sources as much of her food supplies as she can from local people.
The Old Station Café adds a unique quality to the range of eating opportunities that visitors and residents can enjoy in this wonderful Fishguard and Goodwick area.
